Fibsen monitors Pylaia-Chortiati Water pipeline - Greece

On November 2022, the Fibsen team worked on the demonstratation case of its novelty smart fiber-optic sensing system in the Pylaia-Chortiati Water pipeline (Greece). Fibsen teamed up with DEYAPH (Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Pylaia-Chortiatis) to undertake this demo pilot, within project TALOS (Telemetry-Assisted Leakage Optical Sensors), an action co-funded by the European Union through the EIT and Climate-KIC program. The goal was to demonstrate the benefits that smart fiber-optics sensors can bring to the field of water supply monitoring, combining high-precision fiber-optics sensing technology with smart cloud-based data processing to achieve real-time monitoring of water temperature, pressure and leak detection. The test area consisted a 1.100-meter polyethylene pipeline that supplies the city of Chortiati.
Reliable Leak detection
Results demonstrate that Fibsen's system provides reliable detection of threats in water pipelines. Water leaks were detected in real time with a precision of 3 liters per minute. Moreover, smart data processing and storage of the extracted sensor data provides the manager with a plethora of structured information.
The tested technology will allow water suppliers to greatly improve their network managing efficiency, while signifficantly reducing response times and costs.
Fiber optics sensing is a key enabling technology capable of distributed and remote monitoring of these relevant parameters. Combined with a suitable data storage, analysis and communication, the tested solution provides water managers with a powerful and robust system for monitoring and controlling their networks reliably and in real time.
